Did you know that profiles on LinkedIn which have a photo are 7 times more likely to be engaged with? If you want to stand out online, it’s important that you have the right image on your profile to let your connections know that you mean business. It can help you appear trustworthy and encourage more people to connect with you.

We’ve put together this list of 5 tips for business profile photo success:

1.   Use a Headshot

Your profile photo will show up quite small across the LinkedIn site, so you should choose a photo which is just the upper half of your body. Your face should quite large in the photo so that people can easily recognise you. Avoid selfies or cropped group photos at all cost.

2. Dress Appropriately

If you want to give a professional appearance, make sure that you’re wearing smart clothes in the photo. Usually it’s best to choose an outfit which you would usually wear to work. Try not to go for anything too bright or loud since this will stand out too much.

3. Look Friendly and Approachable

Choose an image where you’re smiling naturally. If you look too serious and sombre, it will make you seem intimidating and therefore unapproachable. At the same time, avoid cheesy grins and silly facial expressions.

4. Use a Recent Photo

It might sound obvious but it’s best to choose a photo which actually looks like you. You want to make sure people recognise you in person and aren’t surprised when they meet you. Photos from 10 years ago are too old and need updating.

5. Choose a Simple Background

The focus should be on you, so use a photo where the background isn't distracting. Plain colour backgrounds are best for this.
